BOSTON, MA — Marketing EDGE, a nonprofit education organization, today announced that Seoungwoo Lee of the University of Maryland, College Park is the winner of its 2015 Shankar-Spiegel Dissertation Proposal Award.
This notable award recognizes doctoral candidates from accredited programs with the best dissertation proposals in the area of direct/interactive marketing. The award was presented yesterday during the Marketing EDGE Direct/Interactive Marketing Research Summit in Boston, MA.
“When Ted Spiegel and Professor Venky Shankar created this award they stressed the importance of ensuring innovative research and education in our field,” said Terri L. Bartlett, president, Marketing EDGE.  “We are honored to continue to support future scholars through this distinctive award.”  
Lee’s winning proposal, titled “Free, Paid, or Freemium: Dynamic Versioning Decisions for Mobile Apps” was chaired by University of Maryland Robert H. Smith School of Business Professors Jie Zhang and Michel Wedel. "Seoungwoo Lee's dissertation research rigorously addresses an important and timely topic: how app publishers make versioning decisions and how app platforms can improve their commission structures to achieve mutual benefits. The Shankar-Spiegel award is a great recognition of his work," Professor Wedel said.
"As a researcher, Seoungwoo possesses a fantastic combination of mastery of advanced quantitative modeling and computer programming skills and a sharp mind for developing research topics of managerial importance,” Professor Zhang said. “He is keenly interested in the mobile app industry and digital technologies. I am confident that he will do impactful research in these fields."

About The Shankar-Spiegel Dissertation Award
The Shankar-Spiegel Dissertation Award competition, established in 2007, recognizes the best dissertation proposal in direct/interactive marketing.  The annual competition is named in honor of Marketing EDGE Outstanding Educator Award recipient Venkatesh “Venky” Shankar, Ph.D., who is the Coleman Chair Professor in Marketing at Texas A&M University; and the late Edward J. “Ted” Spiegel, an award recipient of the Direct Marketing Association (DMA) Hall of Fame and president and founder of Spiegel Marketing Associates.  Doctoral candidates in marketing, computer science, economics, management science, organizational psychology, statistics, advertising and communications, strategy, management and organization, and information systems, and other relevant disciplines whose developments help advance the understanding of direct/interactive marketing, are encouraged to apply.
