Interview

Q. Tell us about your organization.

A: At the forefront of innovation for more than 45 years, Quad/Graphics (NYSE: QUAD) is a global marketing services provider that helps brand owners market their products, services and content more efficiently and effectively by using our strong print foundation in combination with other media channels. With a consultative approach, worldwide capabilities, leading-edge technology and single-source simplicity, Quad/Graphics has the resources and knowledge to help a wide variety of clients in multiple vertical industries including retail, publishing, and healthcare. As far as client value, we help our clients perform better in today's rapidly changing world through the integration of print products with complementary services to improve efficiencies, reduce costs, create engagement, lift response and increase revenue. Quad/Graphics provides a diverse range of print and related products, services and solutions from multiple locations throughout North America, South America and Europe, and strategic partnerships in Asia and other parts of the world.

Q: What are your organization’s career needs?  Do you have a corporate mantra around intern and entry-level talent?

A: As a leading printer and marketing services provider, we're looking for innovative thinkers from a wide range of disciplines to help us find a better way of doing everything – be it serving our clients, building our information technology infrastructure, managing our finances and human capital, and more.

While we are known as a printer and marketing services provider for brand owners, at our core, we are an education company. We encourage our employees to be life-long learners because, through education, they can “become something more than they ever hope to be” – a long-standing mantra. That’s why we promote a continuous cycle of education known as “Learn, Know, Improve, Teach.” Through this cycle, employees have reinvented themselves and their careers over and over again without ever leaving the company. We are retaining talent and nurturing continuous learning, resulting in high performers.

Q. What separates your organization from others?

A: In the words of our Chairman, President & CEO Joel Quadracci:

Our People. At Quad, we have a distinct culture that empowers every one of our employees to think and act like an owner. Powered by a passion for innovation, our team of “can-do” people continually challenge the status quo, creating groundbreaking solutions that push the boundaries of communications.

Our Culture and Values. Instilled in the business by my father and Quad/Graphics Founder Harry V. Quadracci, our culture and values are timeless and serve as instructions for how to run our business. The company’s values include having fun, making money and investing in relationships. Trusting in trust. Doing the right thing as well as doing things for the rose (i.e., excellence). Innovating. Growing. And, above all, believing in people. These are all the things that give our company a soul … and a strategic advantage.

Our Platform. Through continued investment in our print manufacturing and distribution platform, we have created one of the most advanced platforms in the industry through which we help clients market more efficiently and more effectively using print in combination with other media channels. With an engaged workforce, we will continue to invest in and strengthen our core manufacturing platform to be the strongest and most sustainable in the industry with the goal of being the industry’s high-quality, low-cost producer by a significant margin.

Our Spirit of Innovation. From Day 1, Quad has been about innovation. We constantly dare ourselves to think differently … to ask “what if” and “why not?” … to experiment. The worst that can happen is we fail trying. The best is we champion the next breakaway idea that catapults us to the next level of success.

Q. What three things do you think a student will want to know about your organization?

A:

  • The stability of the organization, which focuses on innovating solutions, not just producing a product or fulfilling a service.
  • Long-term career potential for students. The company is not one to rest of its laurels. Rather, it is constantly reinventing itself, providing challenging and rewarding career opportunities for employees.
  • Opportunity for growth in marketing services – a growing area of the company. While Quad/Graphics’ roots are in print, its ever-evolving aggregated marketing services – including mobile and digital, and strategic brand marketing – position it well for the future by bridging the gap between traditional and digital channels for marketers and publishers.

Q. What 3-5 skills – hard and soft – do you look for in your entry-level talent?

A:

  • Effective communication (written and verbal)
  • Not afraid to ask questions
  • The ability to adapt quickly to a dynamic work environment
  • Passion to learn

Q. How do you gain access to young talent? Where would a student find out about your intern and entry-level positions?

A:

  • Career fairs, events, college and university job boards and career services
  • LinkedIn
  • Marketing EDGE

Q. What is your relationship to Marketing EDGE?

A: Quad/Graphics is a proud Gold Sponsor.

Q. What are one or more career tips you would give to students preparing to enter the workforce?

A:

  • Listen.
  • Be respectful.
  • Volunteer for projects, which give you the opportunity to share your knowledge and show your value and potential.
  • Take the time to understand the company culture and legacy so you can use that as a platform to connect to future ideas.

Q. Anything else you’d like to share with us?

A: Thank you, Marketing EDGE! We are always looking for ways to develop the next generation of leaders – not only at Quad/Graphics, but in other industries and disciplines, too. That’s why we staunchly support Marketing EDGE and its programs, and have for decades.
